Toric IOL
Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) are used in cataract surgery to correct astigmatism, reducing the need for glasses postoperatively. These lenses have varying powers in each meridian and alignment markers that help surgeons precisely position them for optimal astigmatism correction. Unlike standard mono-focal or multifocal lenses, toric IOLs require pre-surgery corneal markings to identify the eye’s most curved meridian. During surgery, the lens is rotated to align with these markings. While toric IOLs do not increase the risk of complications, improper alignment can cause visual blur that is difficult to correct with glasses or contact lenses.
Benefits of Toric IOL
- Despite astigmatism or a cylindrical number, it helps patients with distant vision without the need for glasses.
- Patients with toric multifocal lenses have a spectacles-free vision in both distant and close ranges.
- The procedure can be carried out painlessly in a matter of minutes using local anaesthesia.
