Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common vision condition that affects the centre of the eye. People in their 50s and 60s are typically the first to be affected by this condition. It does not result in complete blindness. However, it can make simple tasks like reading and recognising faces more challenging.
There are 2 types of macular degeneration: Dry AMD and wet AMD.
Dry AMD: It is also known as atrophic AMD. Here the macula (part of the retina at the back of the eye) gets thinner and progresses in 3 different stages i.e early, intermediate and late.
Wet AMD: It is also called advanced neovascular AMD. Here, abnormal blood vessels start to grow on the macula, resulting in its damage.

Symptoms of age-related macular degeneration

Since this condition affects the middle region of your eye, it can distort your vision to quite an extent. For example 一

  • Seeing straight lines as wavy
  • Objects starting to seem smaller
  • Reduced colour brightness
  • Hallucinations
